Past, Present, Future...

The First United Methodist Church of Irwin dates back to 1860. Though it began as a one-room building at the corner of Main and Third Streets, it has occupied three different buildings during its history and stands now at the corner of Oak and Third Streets.

As the Irwin community continued to grow, the church’s capacity soon became inadequate for the needs of the growing congregation. Ground was broken for the new structure, our current building, in 1928. The plans were for a larger facility but did not include a sanctuary.

Through the Great Depression that began in 1929, and enduring many personal sacrifices by the members to meet the financial needs of the church, FUMC Irwin survived.

The new sanctuary was completed in October of 1958, and still today comes alive with the sounds and sights of many gathered together for worship and fellowship.

We begin a year-long celebration of our Sesquicentennial, our 150 year anniversary, on November 1, 2009. Many activities are planned, including a Health Fair, Youth Fair, Talent show, outdoor service, catered dinner, a celebration of the favorite hymns of the congregation, recognition from various levels of government, and many other events, culminating in a service officiated by our Bishop on October 10, 2010.

The First United Methodist Church of Irwin will continue to strive to make disciples of Jesus Christ. We are a community of Believers, centered on Christ, united by God’s love, and empowered by the Holy Spirit.
